Hortus botanical garden

De Hortus is the oldest botanical garden in the world, created in 1638, and it has more than 4,000 varieties of plants.
Many of the species were brought back from the travels of the Dutch East India Company: this is how a coffee plant was brought over to Europe from Ethiopia in 1706 before being exported to Brazil, which is today the worldwide leading producer of coffee!
