Cologne Cathedral - Kölner Dom

The Gothic style cathedral was the tallest building in the world until 1889.
It is also the 2nd largest church in the world, after the Saint-Peter basilica in Rome.
Its grand scale makes it the very centre of the city, with its 144m long and 86 m wide nave, and its towers climbing up to 157 m.
It was built on a place of worship that already existed when the city was founded: digging revealed the remains of a Roman temple, as well as a church enlarged in the sixth century and replaced in the ninth century by the "ancient cathedral" under the aegis of archbishop Hildebold.
The original church was destroyed by a fire before 900; a second one was built and received the relics of the Three wise men during the time of theHoly Roman Empire.
