Fortified since ancient times, the city of Angoulême has developed within ramparts following the boundaries of the plateau overhanging the rocky cliffs. In the 13th century, the city was developed towards the east and south-east. These new fortifications were re-furbished over the course of centuries as numerous inscriptions dating from the 16th and 17th centuries testify. At the turn of the century, dismantling was started and continued until the middle of the 19th century.
