Stanislas square

The city of Nancy was until the mid-17th century divided into two sections, the old and new town which were separated by an expansive esplanade. It was Stanislas Leszczynski, once king of Poland who became the Duke of Lorraine in 1737, who decided to found a square dedicated to the glory of his son-in-law, Louis XV king of France.

The "Stanislas square" became the first ever place royale ("royal square") in the country, an homage which successfully sacralized the king's image all the while being a venue for popular festivities and events.
