Near to Abbaye aux Dames, Caen, visit

Situated on the heights of the city of Caen, the Abbaye aux Dames, also called the old Benedictine Abbaye de la Trinité, was built in the middle of the 11th century by William the Conqueror and Queen Matilda of Flanders.
The queen was buried in the abbey in 1083.

A military hospital during the French campaign in 1814, the building became the home of the Hôtel Dieu at the beginning of the 20th century.
Over the years the buildings deteriorated.
The whole complex was bought by the Conseil régional de Basse-Normandie (local district council of Lower-Normandy) at the beginning of the 80s: restoration works were then undertaken.
The Abbaye aux Dames in Caen is today a high-point of the region's history.
