The works for the Collégiale Saint-Jean (the collegiate church of Saint Jean) started in 1324 but were disrupted by the end of the Kingdom of Mallorca, the plague and various wars. The initial plans including three naves were redrafted to build a single huge nave. The troubled times which the city encountered at the end of the 15th century left the façade unfinished. In 1601, the bishopric moved from Elne to Perpignan and theEglise Saint-Jean became a cathedral. Some chapels from the Gothic building, such as that of Notre-Dame dels Correchs, assimilated parts of the primitive Romanesque church. The elaborate furniture of the cathedral includes real masterpieces, in particular an organ listed as a historical monument, magnificent Catalan, Gothic and Renaissance altar pieces and a sculpture on wood from the 14th century "le Dévot Crucifix".
