Brescou Fort

Off the shore of Cap d'Agde, Brescou Fort is built on a volcanic island. Built by the Vicount de Joyeuse in 1586, the fort could have been the entrance to the grand port that the Cardinal Richelieu had dreamt of, but construction was stopped after his death.
Completely destroyed in 1632, it was rebuilt from 1680 to its current state, most certainly based on Vauban's architectural plans.
In the 18th Century, the fort became a state prison. Today, it is visited for its interesting architecture and nature.
