Travel to The Marais and Les Halles

The market halls of Paris were built on former marshland as early as the 12th century.
In 1963, les Halles de Baltard, which dated from the second half of the 19th century, were demolished while the Georges Pompidou centre was being built a few hundred metres away. At this time work was also underway to dig five storeys down to accommodate the Forum, with its shops, pool and cinemas.
A vast transport hub, this neighbourhood brings together people from all walks of life in a huge variety of settings.

Le Marais is one of the prettiest and liveliest areas of Paris, and one of great contrasts, with fine dining restaurants, gay-friendly bars and Jewish shops.
Its outstanding built heritage includes listed buildings, museums and private townhouses. In Place des Vosges, art galleries and shops share the arcades around an attractive square which is ideal for whiling away time on the grass.
