Le Drouant

The place is rich in history, in fact its history goes all the way to 1880, the date on which Charles Drouant, originally from Alsace, opened his bar and tobacco shop which fast became a bistrot appreciated for its oysters (from Brittany). Patronised as it was by artists of renown (Renoir, Rodin, Picasso…), the venue became highly prized by the Parisians.
It was at this time thatEdmond Goncourt created his prize rewarding the best authors. The first prix Goncourt was awarded in 1903 and, since 1914, the literary society which awards it has met every month in the bistrot.
Even today Le Drouant is still run by an Alsatian, Antoine Westermann, who has maintained the success of this venue for more than a century.
