Lérins Abbey

The Abbaye de Lérins is on the island of Saint-Honorat, just off the bay of Cannes. The abbey was founded in the 5th century by Saint-Honorat who retreated to the island in around 410. In the early 6th century, Lérins was the most famous monastery in the whole of christianity. Despite many attacks from the Saracens and the Spanish, it subsisted until the end of the 15th century.

The current church was rebuilt in 1880 on the site of the old abbey. The chapels still exist today: the Porcaire chapel, the Saint-Pierre chapel, the Saint-Cyprien-et-Sainte-Justine chapel, the Saint-Sauveur chapel, the Trinity chapel, the remains of the Saint-Michel and Saint-Caprais chapels.
