Saint-Rémi Basilica

This monastic building marked with restraint was built in the 11th century, on the site of the grave of Saint Remi, the arch bishop who baptised Clovis. Enhanced by many Romanesque additions (the nave), Gothic additions (the chancel) and Renaissance additions (the colonnade of the chancel), this basilica, graded as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, presents a façade decorated by windows in all its beauty. Badly damaged by German shells during the First World War, forty years were necessary to restore it. Adjacent to the basilica, the former abbey from the 12th century houses a historical museum and a chapter house with elaborate sculpted ornaments.
