The Château des Ducs de Bretagne or Castle of the Dukes of Brittany occupies a rather special place in the hearts of the people of Nantes and of Bretons. Although Nantes is not technically part of Brittany any more, it was once an important city for this region. This historic castle dates from the 15th and 16th century, with 18th century additions. An outstanding heritage site right in the city centre, this living monument to the history of the city and of Brittany recently underwent a massive restoration programme. This paved the way for the opening of a new national museum dedicated to the history of the chateau and of the city.Over 800 pieces from the museum's permanent collection are displayed as part of a themed presentation over 32 rooms (over 5,000m²). Extensive multimedia resources, a total redesign and modern facilities mean that the museum is now fully accessible to all visitors. An outstanding example of architectural and artistic heritage await visitors: discover the setting which bears witness to the history of Nantes and Brittany.
