Our Lady of the Rosary Basilica

The structure of the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire basilica in Lourdes brings to mind open arms, a well-known biblical gesture. This basilica is one of the most visited sites in Lourdes and is a symbol of fraternity throughout the world.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, in an unusual Romanesque-Byzantine style, is a laid-out as a vast cross over a 2 000m² surface - it was designed as the pedestal to the larger basilica located above the grotto.

The construction of the edifice borrowed from three orders of architecture. Mostly, Romanesque lines characterise the general structure, and the stone bosses indicate a definite Roman influence. But what makes this edifice so interesting are the Venetian mosaics, cupolas and chapels, which are a beautiful example of the Byzantine architectural tradition.
