At the heart of Biarritz, a stone's throw away from the large beach and overlooking the ocean, the musée oceanographic de Biarritz is a very exhaustive museum on the ocean, its flora and fauna.
The aim is to study the historical, geographical, economic and cultural links between Biarritz, its coast and the ocean.
The museum is organised in two parts:
- Marine life, with aquariums, which shows the diversity of the maritime flora and fauna of the Bay of Biscay, including seals and sharks.
- The theme "Man and the sea", history and the economics of fishing (whaling period, traditional fishing, modern techniques, oceanography, etc).
Over 150 species of fish and invertebrates from the Bay of Biscay, the seal pool with underwater viewing, shark cave for a surprising meeting and collections (whales and dolphins, birds, ethnology, meteorology). Seal feeding time at 10.30 am and 5.00 pm every day.
