Travel to Ixelles and Saint-Gilles

Renowned for the Art Nouveau architecture which lines its streets, Ixelles is also famous for the pretty ponds which hint at the underground Maelbeek river. Its many shops, restaurants and cafes, and its student and artist population, make this is one of the liveliest and most appealing neighbourhoods of Brussels.

There are two very different sides to Saint-Gilles.
Its upper part is redolent of the architectural styles of the 20th century, in particular Art Nouveau. Victor Horta's house, now a museum, attracts tens of thousands of style lovers every year.
Further downhill, a vibrant, colourful market is held daily in the streets around Porte de Hal and the church of Saint-Gilles.
Two buildings are worth a detour: Saint-Gilles prison, built in the purest Tudor style, and the town hall, with its ceiling painted by Khnopff.
